We never heard of it either. Two big draws–one is the Cuc Phong National Park — thick dense humid jungle which made me wonder if this was the kind of terrain that was a backdrop for the war. We trekked up to a cave where human remains from the Bronze Age had been found — shrines now built where the skeletons had been and stopped at a primate rehab center where gibbons and lemurs were hanging around.
But my biggest takeaways were from the Emeralda Resort where we stayed and the Van Long Nature Preserve because of all the water lilies that open in the morning and close when it gets dark. Our room had a large balcony over a stream and its own small garden and outdoor shower but it was too cold to use it. Weather has been overcast since we got here, cool and humid. I am beginning to wonder if the sun ever shines here.
